Federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are distributed to agencies that serve residents with differing needs including women living on low and moderate incomes. The guidelines require that 80% of the funds go to brick-and-mortar projects while only 20% is earmarked for administrative use. This means nearly all of the money goes to individuals and there are millions of dollars in Federal grants available for everything from rehabbing senior citizens’ homes to counseling for women who are victims of sexual abuse. Even though the tough economy has put pressure on some grant resources, the Federal grant program is still alive and well for the most part and awards for women, minority women and single mothers with children are still readily available. If you’re an American woman with a verifiable need, a Federal grant might be waiting for you right now.
